I really like mysteries like this, where language, archaeology, and human experience intersect. It would be great to think the disc had an important purpose, but as you say, it may have been something as simple as an administrative document, although that would be an interesting revelation in itself!
I guess everyone to some degree is self-centered. When I read this I was thinking of the pea breeding monk, Gregor Mendel who had the statistical analysis so well laid out about the double stranded DNA. He died unrecognized. This does seem like some really complicated thing going on and I could imagine that somehow the knowledge Renaissance that I'm trying to deliver could end up just like this - totally irrelevant ironically...
